International Conference on Education and the Use of Digital and Computer Thinking

Inform, train and make the education community reflect on the challenges of the digital world

The goal of the conference is to help with teaching digital competencies or with digital technologies

EDUCODE is the first edition of an annual international symposium dedicated to education, practices and research in digital related fields. It is the result of a collaboration between different key digital players in Belgium, all 8 Belgian Universities, large and small private companies, many NGOs and associations active in the field or permanent education, science for the youth with the support of Unesco.

The symposium will take place from 27 to 29 August 2018 on various sites located in the very center of Brussels.

  • Inform - August 27th will be dedicated to the organization of exhibitions, roundtables and conferences open to the general public, to finish with a symphonic concert with choirs. This will take place in the beautiful Bozar concert hall and exhibition center.
  • Train - August 28th will be dedicated to the organization of exchange workshops and demonstrations around education and the use of digital technology and computational thinking. This takes place in the schools École supérieure d’informatique and ISIB
  • Stimulate reflection - August 29th will be devoted to the organization of conferences, exchanges of experiences and research presentations. This takes place at the Belgian Royal Academy

CFP Description

Posters and demonstrations for the August 27th exhibition

Complementarily to the numerous talks and round-tables, there will be an exhibition where classes, associations, professionals will demonstrate what they do in the classroom with technologies, show educational computer programs, distribute material …

We are looking for proposals for these demonstations and posters. The format will be the one of posters. The posters will be displayed during the day of August 27th and should address the following themes (not a closed list) :

  1. Pedagogical experience and class activities preferably presented by the students themselves and using technologies or related to the use of technologies,
  2. Construction of resource, contents and tools or adaptation of learning contents to the new digital possibilities
  3. Use of robots, makey-makey, microbits, arduino, snapchpad or similar tools in the class

The posters will describe at a minimum the context, the contribution of the experience, the tools, the resources and the content. Posters must be anonymized and will be reviewed by at least one member of the scientific committee.

Workshops on August 28th

On August 28th, there will be 60 to 100 practical workshops for teachers.

Contributions should develop the workshops pedagogical experience report conducted with a class or presentation of innovative tools or ways of teaching or workshops reflecting on the use of technology in the classrom. The workshop will be presented in 45 minutes and could be reproduced twice on the day.

Some are expected to be related to a specific discipline (eg. the use of geogebra in math, how to setup up physics experiments using the expeyes environment, how to support math education for 12-14 with coding, …) while other will be transdiciplinary ( eg: learning to code without a computer, learning scratch or python from the age of 6, using the smartphones to illustrate with video the class of history, geography or science and how to process professionally the recodings with a smartphone …)

The workshops should address questions like

  • how to teach with technologies,
  • how to develop computational thinking (with or without computers),
  • how to use some applications (eg. moodle, geogebra, wims, python, scratch, microbit, arduino, expeyes, inkscape, libreoffice, thunderbird, gnupg …) in the classroms

The workshop will be presented in slots of 45, 90 or 135 minutes and could be reproduced twice during the day. The contributions (2 pages) will describe at a minimum the context, the contribution of the experience, the tools, the resources and the content.

Contributions in workshop format must be anonymized and will be reviewed by at least two members of the scientific committee.

Posters and communications for the exchange and science day of August 29th

Contribution in paper format (in French or English or Flemish). The contributions will have to relate a high quality research and address a question of research or an exchange of experience related to any of the following topics :

  1. Computer science education
  2. Teaching computational thinking
  3. Education / digital culture
  4. Digital literacy
  5. Analytics of learning (learning analytics)
  6. Repositories of competences and curriculums
  7. Teacher training
  8. Disconnected education
  9. Evaluation

Contributions, in the form of a short article (up to 5 pages) will be in the following format to allow for easy editing and inclusion in the proceeding that will be published soon after the symposium. They should include :

  • A title accompanied by 3 to 5 keywords ;
  • An introduction that describes the context, the theoretical anchoring, the objectives ;
  • A rigorous description of the methodology based on the use of recognized ;
  • The results, their analyzes, conclusions and perspectives ;
  • A discussion to judge the relevance of the research ;
  • A bibliography comprising maximum 10 references.

Contributions in articles format must be anonymised and will be revised by at least three members of the scientific committee. On the day of August 29th, the articles will be presented in 30 minutes. The proceedings of the colloquium will be published freely following the open-access model, but will be endorsed by a University publishing house.

There will be a lightning talk session for short presentations (5 minutes)
