Bridging the Gap Between Developers and Designers

By Eumir Gaspar

Elevator Pitch

The common workflow of designers and developers work independent of each other can still be improved with a few minor tweaks to your team’s workflow and mindset. I will be discussing how these solutions have helped me and the teams I have been on to be on the same page with everyone.

Description

In development, designers and developers tend to work independent of each other, which often result to miscommunication, slow delivery times and rework. This talk aims to help bridge that gap so your team will work together as one. While this won’t turn your developers into designers overnight, this talk can (hopefully) eliminate the common fear of developers touching CSS or designers touching source code.

Notes

I am a developer with over 10 years of experience in the industry who recently moved to Perth from the Philippines to explore new opportunities. I have been in many different teams with various skill sets and most often than not, there will be developers and designers who pass work to each other.

This process is fairly common, and while not entirely bad, can lead to git mis-merges, miscommunication, and a lot of back and forth. I have solutions for this workflow that have worked in some of the teams I have been on including (but not limited to), component-based mindset, team design discussions, styleguides, etc. I will be talking about these solutions and how it has helped some of my teams deliver robust solutions faster.
