Can we build and maintain Open source design systems for Open source software?

By Eriol Fox

Elevator Pitch

Open Source Software (OSS) is typically maintained by small groups of enthusiastic developers with growing involvement from the design community.

With my work in open source design, I’ve been investigating what open design systems mean practically for OSS and how we can develop DS for open source.

Description

Open source Design has plenty of hurdles to overcome before it is widely adopted by the design community. There are many dedicated open source advocates within the design world but what does it mean to be a designer worked in an open source way? When our tools, systems, education and community are built historically on principles of closed-off expertise and ‘the big reveal’ of design ‘genius’

Open Source Design aims to make not only the outputs of design free and open to everyone but also the processes, thinking, strategy, collaboration and tooling. This could not only make for a more inclusive, global design community but open up the principles of design to wider exposure and critique and make design truly a force for advocating for good in the world.
