BSides was born in 2009 when a number of quality speakers were rejected from a mainstream conference, not due to lack of quality but rather lack of space and time. Our mission is to provide people with options by removing common conference barriers and by providing more options for speakers, topics, and events.
WHO WE ARE
BSidesPGH held its first event in 2011 and is a 100% volunteer-run event! It has only grown as people become more aware of it and seek to participate in their local community.
BSides events combine security expertise from a variety of platforms in search of the “next big thing” in information security. BSides is an open platform that gives security experts and industry professionals the opportunity to share ideas, insights, and develop long standing relationships with others in the community. It is a rare opportunity to directly connect and create trusted relationships with key members of the community.
Each BSides is a community-driven framework for building events for and by information security community members. The goal is to expand the spectrum of conversation beyond the traditional confines of space and time. It creates opportunities for individuals to both present and participate in an intimate atmosphere that encourages collaboration. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. It is where conversations for the next-big-thing are happening.
WHO SHOULD SUBMIT
This is a chance to share about that thing you are really good at, just getting started with, or are excited to share experiences about. Looking for ‘The Next Big Thing’ takes all kinds, so that means you. Yes YOU!
If you find yourself here and aren’t sure if you should submit, that’s a definite sign that we want to help you get your start.
Presenters are expected to bring their own devices, although it may be possible to work with those who only are able to bring slide decks. A limited range of adapters may be available, but better to plan to bring your own, just in case.
While not limited to the following, the tracks will loosely adhere to the following themes:
- In the Rivers (Technical & Detailed)
- On the Bridges (Concepts, strategy, and industry challenges)
- Thunderstorms (Lightning Talks)
Talks should be around 35-40 minutes in length. This should leave time for questions or discussions, not to mention allowing a few minutes between talks.
Lightning Talks should be around 15 minutes with 5 mins for Q&A.
Here are some specific things we’re looking for in a good submission. Include these in the Description section below.
- An outline of the talk (The more detail you provide, the more confidence we’ll have that you’re worth listening to.)
- Have you given this talk at other conferences? If so, when & where?
- Is your company name mentioned at all after your Bio slide? If so, what’s the context & why?
- Are there any additional files or documentation you can link us to about your topic? (white papers, proof of concept, code, etc)
- Ideal talks will have some sort of deliverable for the audience. Not cookies or beer (you can still bring cookies and we got the beer;) but something they can take back to their work or personal life and use TODAY. Practical actions, scripts, methodologies, commands, etc. that people can use after the talk and find value from – these are what the reviewers will be looking for.
