Are there now too many hackathons?

The hackathon scene has ballooned in the last year, especially in the UK. There will come a point when near every university will be running such events. Can we work together to partner on events or do we need to adapt the formula?

What will happen when we get to this point, how will we be able to run events in this saturated environment, and how will we fund them.
