Description

Continuous Improvement and Development Drives Successful Recruiting: DevOps Style.

Continuous improvement; it is a core value of DevOps. This is mirrored in building high functioning teams. Successful leaders are constantly focusing on improving their teams, whether it be through professional development of current members, or through adding new members. These leaders understand their teams must be continuously improving to win. IME “The Peter Principle” in engineering is systemic. Most times, professional development programs geared towards engineers are missing within organizations. Many of the managers I know and work with either “inherited” their leadership role or were “priced in” due to salary expectations. These managers learn to manage through trial and error. Leading people in this capacity damages the existing team by creating bottlenecks in workflow. Organizations will thrive only through professional development programs that align appropriately with each employees’ career goals. In order to find success in recruiting top tech talent in today’s market, organizations must be transparent about who they are, where they are going, and how they plan on getting there. Each employee must be empowered and acknowledged for their applied efforts. It is necessary to appreciate team building as a journey where investment to change is rewarded.

Notes

I will share my experiences on successfully growing and developing technical teams. We will assess these techniques through a process geared towards growing an engineering organization. • Creating professional development programs and driving adoption • Becoming a Teaching and Learning centered organization • Transparency and honesty about who you are, where you are going, and how you plan to get there • Becoming a leader within your community by sharing your experiences • Creating and managing your recruiting process as a continuous journey. Not a task action. 1. Gathering Requirements 2. Defining and setting expectations 3. Reviewing infrastructure 4. Executing your plan
