Giving advices without friction

By Steven Mak

Elevator Pitch

The following may sound familiar: you observed a situation and try to give suggestions. Sometimes it works well. But there are times you encounter fightback and resistance. You wonder why.

In this session, I share with you why resistance happens and a pattern of giving advices through exercises.

Description

The following may sound familiar to you: whether it is some online forum, or face to face scenarios, there are people asking questions and then there are people giving huge amount of suggestions. Perhaps you have experience suggesting something too. Sometimes it works well and you enjoy it. But there are times you encounter fightback and resistance from the person / team you are giving advices.

Is that because they don’t like you? Is that because some people are particularly hard to work with?

In this session, based on theories from Motivational Interviewing and my ScrumMastering practices, I will share with you a simple pattern of giving advices through exercises. Then I will share further what does resistance make of and what to observe to see how likely someone will be committed to what you suggested, and how that can turn into action plan collaboratively.

Topics - The problem with “Righting Relex” - What is a good opportunity for giving advices - What is the nature of resistance - What are the elements of commitment language How does knowing all these help you becoming a better Scrum Master.

This session involves sharing, small group exercises, video sharing, and Q&A

Run down - Background - EPPE method and demonstration -Group practice - Video - What is resistance? - What led to discord? - What to do with sustain talk? - Group practice - Q&A
