Description

Legal frameworks around gender equality are a huge factor is in reached goal for SDG 5 which is to end all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere. According to UN Women Africa is the highly affected mostly due to issues of Culture, Traditions and beliefs, there are however legal frameworks that have been put In place to ensure that all countries achieve gender equality. This study uses R packages to conduct a Non exceedance probability analysis that will show which countries have reached the threshold (Elimination of all forms of discrimination against women and girls) through implementation of legal frameworks and by how far it has achieved this.
This analysis is based on SDG 5 indicators specifically indicator 5.1.1 which states “whether or not legal frameworks are in place to promote, enforce and monitor equality and non-discrimination on the basis of sex.” This indicator measures various factors including: Hiring, Equal Pay, marital rape and property rights among others. It focusses on the Africa Region where i has been reported that legal frameworks exist but there is a challenge in implementation and enforcement of the law. The study made use of R Packages to conduct an analysis of the threshold to which policy framework hasn’t been reached in each country in Africa through non exceedance probability. The results of this work will be visualized and be made public to increase visibility for the work and provide access to policy decision makers and Gender Activists. This work is done as part of our mandate as Women in GIS to use data to support and champion for Gender Equity. It is a follow through from the campaign conducted in 2019 in support of #16Daysofactivism, which Women in GIS supported through creation of a dashboard that visualized the problem as it currently is. The link to the dashboard is available here.

Notes

For this session, I will talk about the process of analysis, the discussions we’ve held as a community on this and with gender advocates. I shall be looking for feedback on the methods and tools from the experts in the audience. I believe I am best fit to speak on this subject because not only am i passionate about Gender Equality and using data to identify patterns and trends. Data is also used to visualize and highlight problem areas. Speaking on this subject will provide a platform to and invoke the audience to think about the legal framework around gender issues and want to do something about it.
