Thank God It's Monday! How to Foster Engaged, Empowered, High-Performing Teams

By Bill DeVoe

Elevator Pitch

How many people can truly say “Thank God It’s Monday”? It’s actually something any team can achieve provided they’re given the space, the authority, and the space to becoming truly high-performing. Let’s talk about how everyone – team members, leaders, and managers – can foster the TGIM mindset!

Description

Context

When I started my agile journey, I was fortunate enough to be a member of what ended up being a high-performing team. We had great “ba”, or a strong sense of team identity. I was excited to come into work after the weekend so I could work on cool things with cool people. I realized later that this was what I’ve come to call a “Thank God It’s Monday” mindset. A mindset where I felt that I was part of a great team. One where I felt empowered to make decisions and stand by them, right or wrong. One where I felt confident that my team would complete the work we committed to - and one where we did!

Specifics

TGIM is possible for any team, but it requires some elements to be successful. In this talk, I explore what the team can do to help foster engagement, what management can do to empower teams to be successful, and how everyone can work together to create high-performing teams. What kinds of activities and behaviors can create that sense of “ba” for the team? What kinds of behaviors should managers exhibit to empower teams? How do we allow and encourage teams to self-organize? And what techniques can we use to celebrate learning and success? We’ll discuss the different activities and behaviors that can help high-performing teams blossom and gain practical experience with some team-level techniques.

Audience

This talk is focused on anyone who’s involved in creating great teams - team members, Scrum Masters, coaches, and management.
