Workshop description

‘Web Accessibility Guidelines’ has been published more than a decade ago but still, less than 10% of sites are accessible. Nowadays the responsibility of accessibility is upon the web designers and engineers, even though organisations are advocating the importance of accessibility design and there are laws to enforce the equality and accessibility, the browsing experience of people with special needs are still depending on the awareness of the industry. We think it’s time to take control and make a change. How about using AI to make people “see”, to make people “hear and to make people browsing the internet without barriers.

In this workshop, we will first spend 15mins get to know each other, talk about why we are here and form into groups. Then, we will spend 15mins exploring the cutting edge AI technology available, including computer vision, text to speech, speech to text algorithms etc. At the last 15 mins, we will put our ideas all together and see how those algorithms can help people with different needs. With all these ideas, we can discover a new way of applying AI technologies for accessibility.

Workshop goals

After the workshop, attendees will know more about the AI technologies that are available. They will be more aware of the needs of different people. The result of the discussion will help us in designing our open-source accessibility browser extension.

What materials are needed to run your workshop? Are there any physical space requirements?
