Bio

Ken Mugrage is a Principal Technologist in the Thoughtworks Office of the CTO, where he leads the team behind the company’s flagship technology thought leadership — the Thoughtworks Technology Radar, Looking Glass, and the Thoughtworks Technology Podcast. He is a member of the Technology Advisory Board (TAB), the senior technologist group that researches and writes the Radar.

Ken has over 30 years in the IT industry, including 15+ years at Thoughtworks. His career began as a system administrator for Seattle’s first internet service provider in the early 1990s. He went on to found his own web development company in 1994, building some of the first data-driven websites, and later held nearly every role in a software development organization — from developer to director of a global engineering team. At Thoughtworks, he previously served as product manager for the open-source continuous delivery server GoCD and as a Technology Evangelist focused on Continuous Delivery and DevOps.

Ken is the author of a widely cited definition of DevOps — “a culture where people, regardless of title or background, work together to imagine, develop, deploy and operate a system” — now used by organizations including SAP in their official training. He is a former global organizer for DevOpsDays and has spoken at conferences worldwide including GOTO, QCon, O’Reilly Software Architecture, All Day DevOps, and No Fluff Just Stuff. He is also a US Marines veteran and a contributor to MIT Technology Review.
