Resiloing

By Laura Santamaria

Elevator Pitch

DevOps is about breaking down silos to enable better collaboration across teams. However, we don’t follow that with our logs. If they’re even present, logs are a confusing jumble of data accessible to a few. Why do we resilo like this? Why we need log silos? How can we log in the spirit of DevOps?

Description

DevOps as a whole is all about breaking down silos. We want to enable better communication and collaboration across teams from devs to security to QE to ops. However, we don’t follow that practice with our logs. We continue to make our logs a confusing jumble of data accessible to only a select few, if they’re present at all. I like to call this resiloing.

Let’s talk about this process of resiloing, why we even need log silos (sometimes), and how to do logging in the spirit of DevOps.
