Closing the Fidelity Gap with Component Libraries

By Simon Yost

Elevator Pitch

Starting app and web development with static design mockups is failing us. We don’t need to fire everyone, and we need some new systems, so our teams interact differently. Join us to discover how component libraries are the key to unlocking our teams’ potential along with tips on implementation.

Description

In 2006, The Walt Disney Company purchased Pixar, appointed Pixar’s leadership over Disney Animation Studios, and cross their fingers that Buzz Lightyear’s magic would rub off on Disney’s struggling animation division. Disney Animation seemed to complete its transformation with the release of Frozen in 2013 grossing $1.3B. The revolutionary outcome of Disney’s transformation is that there was little turnover. When asked how he transformed Disney Animation, Pixar’s President and Cofounder, Ed Catmull responded:

“We put in some new systems, they learned new ways of interacting, and they changed their behavior, and now they are a completely different group of people when they work together.”

Creators of digital properties, apps, and websites have long started efforts with design comps—static pictures that represent how the coded version should appear. That process is failing us. We don’t need to fire everyone and start over, and, like Disney, we need some new systems and structures to help our teams interact differently.

In this session, we will discover how component libraries are the key to unlock our team’s potential and tech-neutral language for discussing them and implementing them. Our hope is that use component libraries will transform your team and help them interact with each other as never before.

Notes

Greetings! I would be honored to present at your event. My mission is to empower teams to close the gap between design and engineering so that digital experiences connect people. Practically, I’m very hands-on coding in various languages from JavaScript to GoLang. Keeping a hands-on role helps me maximize the potential of multi-disciplinary teams and create sustainable, nimble digital experiences and technical solutions.

I have spent 15 years building organizations (startups, nonprofits, and enterprise) in the Midwest region by spearheading digital strategy and content delivery. That includes countless hours coaching professionals and students on building applications, creating digital experiences, and installing systems in their businesses. I currently serve as a technology consultant at Slalom St. Louis.

Here is a recent example of my speaking from an internal learning festival at Slalom: https://youtu.be/dRzRxMnEdL8

Outside of work, I am a husband, father, amateur cyclist, and self-professed coffee aficionado. My passions include foster/adopt parenting and Nebraska football.
