Grassroots Kube

Elevator Pitch

Are you interested in shifting the way engineers at your company think about using Docker and/or Kubernetes? Here’s how we changed the public opinion inside our company from one of apprehension to excitement about these newer technologies and how you can do the same.

Description

In the last year, the adoption of containers and Kubernetes has spread rapidly across ReadyTalk. Docker was seen as a shiny new technology that had some promise. We had one small team using it for a brand new product, but adoption wasn’t happening in any other part of the company. Then the infrastructure team discovered Kubernetes and fell in love with it. We now have many internal and production services running in Kubernetes, and adoption on new projects is almost assumed. Even some legacy production services are being moved to Kubernetes.

My goal is to provide a set of tools that anyone can use in their own situation to affect change.

The tools we had and used to achieve this goal include: * A passionate and hardworking SRE/DevOps Team * Hackathons * Mangement Support * Continued Internal Evangelism (Demos Demos Demos) * Attending Conferences * Following a set of guiding principles and best practices

Notes

Why am I qualified to talk about this?

I believe that what we have achieved at ReadyTalk over the last year has been incredible. What we have built and the way the perception has changed over this time has taught me a lot about how to create impactful change in an organization that is receptive to it.

Length and Format

This talk could be done as a full talk or a lightning talk, depending on the depth of detail that I go into. I believe it might get a little long as a full length talk, but could afford a lot of time for people to ask questions.
