Agile Beginnings is a new, annual conference from BCS Agile Methods Specialist Group. This conference is an opportunity for new and aspiring agilists to learn from, and present to, other early career agilists. Focussing on the needs of new practitioners, it aims to provide a broad range of topics to help build skills, knowledge and competence.

Agile Beginnings is a hybrid conference, held simultaneously in-person and streamed online. Our preference is for in-person speakers, but virtual speakers will be considered by the organising team.

Agile Beginnings is part of the Early Career Agilists programme being run by BCS Agile Methods Specialist Group.

Agile Beginnings will be held on 16 Sep 2022 at BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, 25 Copthall Avenue, London, EC2R 7BP.

CFP Description

We’re looking for people who are new to the agile practice domain (up to two years of experience), or new to public speaking, to submit proposals for different formats of talks on a range of themes.

We welcome people of all ages, genders, abilities, racial and ethnic groups, and other diverse backgrounds, to share their knowledge and experiences, and explore ideas. To be accepted, you should have limited or no experience as a presenter at a conference or meetup group.

We’d like to stress that “early career” in this context doesn’t mean you are young, but that you’ve only recently started working in the agile domain. We particularly welcome people moving from other careers, and recent entrants to the workforce.

Themes

We’re interested in talks on the following topics:

Tools I Wish I Had Earlier

This could be a technique someone showed you, a facilitation method which helped you or a metaphor that empowered a team. Whatever it is, it’s something that would have been helpful before…

Lessons Learned

Tell us about a particular experience, and what you learned from it that has informed your subsequent practice. Maybe you introduced agility to a team, or reinvigorated a team, or participated in an agile transformation. What did you discover that might help others?

Big Ideas

Has a theory, concept or belief changed the way you think about agility? Would you like to share your insights with others? This is the theme for you!

People Are “Awefulsome”

We all know that systems would work well if it wasn’t for people being involved, but what insights do you have that can make working with colleagues just that little bit easier? What would make your teams more inclusive or diverse? Draw on psychology, sociology, philosophy or just plain old experience to highlight better ways of relating!

Back to Basics

The original Values and Principles from the Agile Manifesto still hold true and have stood the test of time. Do you have a favoured Value or Principle? Share a short story on why that is the case and how it has helped your practice and embedding of Agile ways of working within your team or enterprise.

Formats

We know that public speaking for the first time is difficult, so we’ve got a range of different formats:

  • Lightning Talk - 10 minute talk on a subject of your choice (these will be batched together, with a single Q&A session at the end for all contributors)
  • Short Talk - 15 minute talk on a subject of your choice plus 5 minute Q&A
  • Full-Session Talk - 45 minutes plus 10 minute Q&A

We are only anticipating a couple of Full-Session talks, so the focus is on Lightning and Short talks!
