Introduction

DevConf is a community driven, developer focused, one-day conference hosted annually in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa. The aim of the conference is to provide software developers a buffet of tools, practices and principles applicable to tackling current and future challenges in the South African software development environment. It’s an event where attendees can learn, network and be inspired regardless of their specific technology stack and programming language of choice.

Why

DevConf serves to inspire software developers. A range of topics applicable to software development will be presented. From keeping up to date with the latest technologies and trends to tackling the challenges of working in large enterprise systems – it’s a buffet of experiences, ideas and pragmatic advice as well as an opportunity to connect with peers across the industry.

Types of talks

We have two types of talks and both types are presentation style on stage in front of an audience. These talks are not suited for audience participation.

  • Full slot: This is a 45 min slot. Do demos, play audio, do anything! Time is for everything; including Q&A.
  • Lightning talk: This is a 15min slot. It is a slide only presentation (slides must be provided a week before the event). These are recommended for first time speakers.

The audience at DevConf is a wide range of people, from junior developers to senior management. There is no specific tech or vendor association. We tend to get more corporate developers attending so we find that talks which help developers find new tech or solve problems are really well received. Java, JavaScript and .NET are very popular in South Africa but we would love talks for other languages too. Security talks have been consistently rated high.

We also have a small number of slots for a more fun talk where you could cover something not so work related, for example: flying a drone with VR, machine learning & brewing beer, or integrating hardware to Kerbal using JavaScript are all great talks.

Sales pitches are not welcome.

When

DevConf 2018 will take place for the third year in Johannesburg on the 27th March 2018 and, for the first time, Cape Town on the 29th March 2018.

Cape Town is a smaller event, and as such not all speakers from the Johannesburg event will be offered a slot in Cape Town. Lightning talks will be unique per event.

Included

All selected speakers to DevConf include a pass for the event and invite to the speakers only dinner. Travel and accommodation can also be included full slot presenters. This includes international speakers.

International Speakers

Yes, we can cover travel and accommodation for you too!

CFP Description

What type of content are we looking for?

Anything that is relevant to developers, be that about code, platforms, technology, methodologies, how to work with people or just things which are cool. We want transparent and real experiences - this isn’t a place for a sales pitch. We want all types of speakers - first timers or experienced! We have an opportunity for all.

Expectations for speakers

In addition to the presentation on the days of the event, we will have two additional functions for speakers we would like you attend: * The day before the event we will have a tech check at the conference venue from 3pm. It should take no longer than 15min. * The night before the event we will have a speakers dinner near the venue and we would love for you to attend and meet the other speakers.

Lightning talks

  • You will need to have your slide deck submitted one week before so they can be compiled together and be made ready on the day.
